This is the updated version of the guitar that I used to stock in the late 1980s and through the 1990s, until Bruce Zumsteg was too busy building his Zumsteel professional guitars and had no time to manufacture the Stage One.  The new manufacturer, Doug Earnest, has made several excellent improvements (see features, above).  The tone and playability are as good as any pro steel I've played!  It's termed a "student" guitar, purely because the copedant can't be altered easily (no bell-cranks, etc.).  It comes with an Emmons set-up.

GREAT TONE!  FANTASTIC VALUE!  A SUPER STEEL!
BUT, don't just take my word for it!

Read what Nashville session player, Michael Douchette posted  on the Steel Guitar Forum, on 31 July 2010:

"Over the years, I've had a Franklin, several push-pull Emmons' and several Sho-Buds.  (Living here in Nashville, that's kinda what was here).  Hands down, the BEST recording guitar I've ever owned is my Zum Stage One.  It has the best presence in a track over any of them; and for me, that is most important."

Put aside all preconceptions you may have about "student" guitars - this is a "pro" in all ways but one (see above)!

And, from a customer in Sweden, who plays a Fessenden D-10:
... soundwise, (the Stage One) is comparable to the Fessenden!  It only weighs 18Kg, (the Fessenden weighs 35kg)! ... I am very pleased with my Stage One Pedal Steel Guitar and can recommend it to anyone, beginner or pro. It's a well-built, good-sounding, light-weight and good-looking pedal steel. - AE, Sweden.

And, from a customer in England, who played an Emmons LeGrande D-10 for 30 years:
... this is a grand little guitar - with a very good spec of 3 pedals and four levers.  It takes a little getting used to size-wise after a twin neck - but it delivers the E9th goods!  For a student guitar, the finish and quality are first-rate - adjustable legs, quality head, tuning pegs and rollers.  Add to this a great pick-up with a tone to match.  I'm really pleased! AP, East Anglia.

It's good to receive comments like this from time to time!  GH

USED PEDAL STEELS

A Fantastic chance to buy a truly vintage

ZB D10 with 8 floor pedals and 3 knee levers
finished in green and natural birdseye maple
Serial No. 0273 - dates from early 1970s

Until recently, this was owned, for 20 years, by a renowned UK steel player, now sadly deceased.  From the serial number (0273 - see photo below) this can be dated to manufacture in the early 1970s, in Phoenix, AZ.  The guitar undercarriage needs a clean, but all is working well.  As on every steel, I'd want to alter the pedal heights to suit me - something easily accomplished.  The E9th pedal set-up is "Day".  There are a few "dings" in the birdseye maple, but considering the guitar is 45 years old, it has worn very well!  With its natural "Tom Brumley" tone, this is definitely a very collectable instrument .

Between 1976 and 1985, I owned a D11 (identical colour scheme and finish) version of the above guitar.  It had 8 pedals and 6 knee-levers.  Here is a well-known and popular BBC TV clip, from a 1984 "Sing Country" programme, featuring Emmylou Harris, Albert Lee, Pete Wingfield and my ZB D11!

(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vEiQOSsR9v0.   It includes her lovely version of the song "Together Again"

(The steel solo comes at about 22 mins and 40 secs into the clip).

I hope the clip convinces you that a ZB has "that" sound!  If not, it's worth the time, to listen to Emmylou anyway!

I found another similar steel on the web that was for sale last year on ebay - it sold for $4850!

comments such as:
... I just picked up a 70 model D10 and having played every major brand, including a Push pull, this guitar has the best sound I have ever had. It would have to go a long way to beat my Sho bud but I think it does ...

I
n or around 1973 or 74, I was playing in St. Louis at what I think was one of Scotty's early conventions, where I met Bill Simms at the ZB booth. I was quite taken with the guitars they were displaying, especially a beautiful honey colored D-10 with pearloid inlay and machine jeweled endplates, pedal bar and knee levers. Long story short, Bill and I became friends and I received the guitar a week later with the added knee levers I requested. What a guitar. I played the guitar for only a short time, perhaps a year and got side tracked to something else, as we steel players often do. I did send the guitar back to the factory in Arizona with a note of explanation. I often wonder where that guitar is and what ever happened to the nice Mr. Simms.
